What Is Aeration?

Aeration is the process of loosening compacted soil to allow water, air, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. TurfMark Outdoor Solutions offers:
  • Core Aeration for warm-season lawns (Bermuda and Zoysia), typically performed in spring and summer. This mechanical method removes small soil plugs to open space for root expansion and nutrient uptake.
  • Aeration and Overseeding for Fescue lawns, performed in early fall to encourage new growth and repair thin or damaged patches. This service is built into our Fescue Premier Program. With every aeration service, we also apply a starter fertilizer to give your lawn the nutrients it needs for stronger, healthier growth.

Why Aeration Is Right for You?

Buford’s heavy clay soil tends to compact easily—especially with foot traffic, rainfall, and mower use. That compaction makes it hard for your lawn’s roots to get the oxygen and nutrients they need, leading to shallow growth and brown patches. Aeration addresses this directly by creating space beneath the surface and giving your lawn room to thrive.

If you’ve noticed thinning grass, slow growth, or water runoff, your lawn likely needs aeration. With our core aeration services, TurfMark ensures your turf gets the treatment it needs—whether you’re maintaining a lush summer lawn or restoring overall turf health

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my lawn needs aeration?

If your lawn feels hard underfoot, develops dry spots quickly, or has areas of thinning or pooling water, it likely needs aeration.

Warm-season lawns like Bermuda and Zoysia should be aerated in spring or summer. Cool-season lawns like Fescue should be aerated (and overseeded) in early fall.

Only Fescue lawns benefit from overseeding, which is why it’s included with fall aeration in our Fescue Premier Program. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia do not benefit from overseeding, as pre-emergents applied during their growing season prevent both weeds and seed germination. Instead, these grasses naturally spread through stolons (above-ground stems) and rhizomes (underground stems), which grow laterally, form nodes, and send up new shoots to fill in bare spots and thicken the turf.
